Off the beaten path in Venice!
Take a stroll about the “other” side of the Grand Canal in the romantic, traditional Venice sestiere (district) of Dorsoduro. Let our professional English-speaking guide show you this fascinating slice of the city. A world all its own, this area is often overlooked by other tours of Venice. If you’re looking for winding ways, passages and hidden gems; galleries, restaurants and local color; this intimate glimpse of Venetian culture is for you.
A Haunted House and Refuge for Children
Ca’Dario, or the Palazzo Dario, is a castle with an intriguing history of murder and mayhem that has befallen many unfortunate owners of this illustrious property. Rumored to be haunted, we’ll visit - if you dare. We’ll also see the site of the Fondamenta degli Incurabli, or Canal Bank of the Incurables. We’ll learn the interesting history of this Renaissance hospital/orphanage that provided music education for its young conservati (orphans).
Ernest Hemingway was a visitor to Venice, and we’ll see Harry’s Bar, where he wasn’t opposed to tipping a glass or two of Prosecco. Also on our tour is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, or the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni. You’ll be awed by its location on the Grand Canal, its terrace and Istrian stone façade. We’ll also see the famed Palazzo Contarini-Fasan (Contarini-Fasan Palace), home of the noble Desdemona, and perhaps the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Othello.
Optional Gondola Ride
Conducted by a local gondolier, you’ll enjoy a pre-arranged gondola ride through the quiet back canals. There will be no guided commentary, and an intimate mood. Each gondola seats six. Marvel at the ancient buildings that hug the banks and experience the essence of Venice.
